FAQs – Understanding SIL Support

Common questions from participants and families about SIL services.

What is SIL?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS support designed for people who live in shared or group accommodation and require daily assistance with personal care, household tasks, and skill development. It is not just about help — it’s about creating a home environment where participants can live as independently as possible while still receiving the support they need to thrive.
SIL is available to NDIS participants who have been assessed as needing 24/7 or daily assistance in a shared living arrangement. These participants usually require help with tasks such as cooking, cleaning, personal care, or medication management. ZIM CARE works closely with participants and their support coordinators to determine if SIL is right for them and to ensure all eligibility requirements are met.
The cost of meals, groceries, rent, and utilities is usually separate from SIL funding. However, ZIM CARE can help organise meal preparation, shopping assistance, and household budgeting to make day-to-day living smooth. We’ll work with you to set clear arrangements for how shared costs are managed, ensuring transparency and fairness among all residents.
While housemate selection depends on availability and NDIS arrangements, ZIM CARE makes every effort to place participants in a home where personalities, routines, and lifestyles align. We believe a positive living environment starts with compatibility, so we consider individual preferences, habits, and social comfort when matching housemates.
